CAMP DAVID, The President's Retreat
Conceived in approximately 1935, Camp David was originally a Work Projects
Administration (WPA) project. Like all WPA projects, the purpose was to
give unemployed men work. WPA projects included construction of over 110,000
buildings, over 75 bridges, over 650,000 miles of road and improvements
to over 800 airports. The wonderful old co-op of Greenbelt was constructed
as a WPA project. Camp David is located in the Catoctin Mountain Park,
just west of Thurmont. Presidents since Franklin Roosevelt have enjoyed
this special retreat. The cool mountain air and lovely views were a peaceful
respite from the humidity and hectic life in Washington, D.C.
